Outdoor Siren Installation Guide UK¶
Guide to outdoor alarm siren installation for UK homes covering mounting height, wiring, tamper protection, strobe positioning, and compliance with Aico and BS 5839 standards.
Outdoor Siren Types and UK Requirements¶
The external siren (sounder) is the most visible part of your UK alarm system. It serves as a deterrent, a warning to neighbours, and a visual indicator via the strobe light. UK regulations require external sirens to comply with BS EN 50131-4 and the NSI Code of Practice for alarm installation. Grade 2 systems require a self-contained bell box with internal backup battery. Popular UK siren models: Texecom Odyssey X (£45-£65, Grade 2, twin piezo), Pyronix ProSounder X (£40-£60, Grade 2, LED strobe), and Ajax CombiProtect (£80-£120, wireless, integrated PIR and siren). Siren mounting height: 2.5-3.5 metres above ground level. Mount on a front-facing wall visible from the street for maximum deterrent effect. Use a rear wall if the front is not accessible. The siren must be out of arm's reach from ground level. Fix using four M6 stainless steel screws into brickwork with wall plugs. Drill 6mm holes 50mm deep. Run 4-core alarm cable from the panel to the siren - two cores for bell trigger and strobe, two for tamper circuit.
Wiring and Configuration Guide¶
Wiring connections (standard UK alarm siren): Red = 12V DC supply, Black = 0V negative/ground, White = Bell trigger (positive triggers the siren), Blue = Strobe trigger (positive activates the flashing LED), Green/Yellow = Tamper return circuit. The built-in siren battery (typically 2.4Ah 12V sealed lead-acid) provides standalone operation if the main cable is cut - the siren continues to sound for 15-20 minutes. Configure siren duration in the alarm panel installer menu - 15 minutes is standard for UK Grade 2 systems. Strobe flash pattern: continuous for fire, pulsing for intrusion on dual-purpose systems. Set the tamper response to Immediate Alarm (not delayed) for the external siren. Use silicone sealant on all cable entry points to prevent moisture ingress. Test the siren weekly via the alarm panel test function. Replace the internal siren battery every 3-5 years. Siren prices from Screwfix and Toolstation: basic sounders from £25, Grade 2 sounders from £45, wireless sounders from £80.

FAQ¶
- Where should I mount my alarm siren?
- Mount on a front-facing wall at 2.5-3.5 metres height, visible from the street for deterrent effect. Avoid positions near overhanging trees where leaves block the sound. If the front wall is not accessible, use a rear wall visible from the garden.
- How loud should my alarm siren be?
- UK Grade 2 sirens produce 100-110 dB at 1 metre. This is sufficient for UK semi-detached houses. Terraced houses may need adjustable volume to avoid excessive noise to neighbours. Most sirens have a volume control setting in the installer menu.
- Does my siren need an internal battery?
- Yes - Grade 2 compliance requires the external siren to have an independent backup battery. This allows the siren to sound even if the main cable is cut. Replace the battery every 3-5 years. For more information see our Pet-Friendly Alarm Sensor Guide.
