Starlink WiFi Security Best Practices

Secure your Starlink WiFi network against unauthorised access in the UK. This guide covers router security settings, guest networks, encryption standards, firewall configuration, and monitoring for Starlink Gen 3 and Mini installations.

The Starlink Gen 3 router supports WPA2 and WPA3 encryption - select WPA3 for maximum security. WPA3 uses Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE) which is resistant to offline dictionary attacks. For devices that do not support WPA3, enable WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. The Gen 3 router also supports WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) - disable WPS in the Starlink app under Settings > Router. WPS is vulnerable to brute-force attacks and should always be disabled. Change the default SSID and password - the default password is printed on the router and should be changed immediately. Create a strong WiFi password minimum 12 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. The Starlink app allows you to see all connected devices. Review the device list weekly for unknown connections. Enable 'Lock Down Network' in the app to temporarily block all new device connections. The Starlink router has a built-in firewall that blocks incoming connections by default. For advanced security enable Bypass Mode and use a third-party firewall router (Ubiquiti Dream Machine £250 with advanced firewall rules or pfSense on a Protectli Vault £300).

Guest network - set up a separate guest WiFi network for visitors. The Starlink router supports guest network in the app (Settings > WiFi > Guest Network). Enable guest isolation so guests cannot access your local network devices. For Gen 3 routers guest network supports 2.4GHz only. Band steering - enable band steering in the app to move devices to the optimal frequency band (2.4GHz vs 5GHz). This improves security by keeping IoT devices on the isolated 2.4GHz band while personal devices use 5GHz. MAC filtering - add allowed device MAC addresses in the app for additional access control. Not foolproof as MAC addresses can be spoofed but adds a layer of security. Device management: regularly review the connected device list in the Starlink app. Unknown devices should be investigated and blocked if suspicious. The app shows device name, MAC address, IP address, and connection type (WiFi/Ethernet). Firmware updates: keep the Starlink system firmware up to date for security patches. Updates install automatically. For business use consider a third-party security router with IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection/Prevention System) and VPN server. The Ubiquiti Dream Machine (£250) includes all these features and integrates well with Starlink in Bypass Mode.
