CCTV Junction Box and Mounting Guide

Junction boxes protect CCTV cable connections from weather, tampering, and provide a secure mounting point. This guide covers junction box types, mounting on UK wall types, cable sealing, and bracket selection for dome, bullet, and PTZ cameras.

CCTV Junction Box Types and Selection

Junction boxes serve two functions: protecting the camera cable connection from weather (critical for UK outdoor use) and providing a stable mounting surface. Types: Surface-mount junction box (most common, plastic or metal, 10-25 from Screwfix) mounts on the wall and the camera attaches to the box. Flush-mount junction box (recessed into the wall for a cleaner look, suitable for brick walls, 15-30). Corner junction box (90-degree angled for corner mounting, 12-20). Adapter junction box (brand-specific, Hikvision DS-1275ZJ, 8-15). Material options: ABS plastic (UV-resistant, cost-effective, suitable for most UK homes), aluminium (stronger, better for heavy PTZ cameras, 20-40), and stainless steel (coastal areas, corrosion-resistant, 30-60). Size: standard (100x100x40mm for dome/bullet cameras) and large (120x120x50mm for PTZ/speaker cameras). IP rating: IP66 minimum for outdoor boxes. Ensure the box has a gasket seal on the lid. The box must have pre-cut rubber grommets for cable entry - at least 2 entry points for cable in and cable out. For UK brick walls, use Fischer UX 10x50mm wall plugs with 3.5x40mm screws for the junction box. For timber, use 4x40mm wood screws. Seal the back of the box with silicone sealant before fixing to prevent water ingress through the wall fixing holes.

Mounting Cameras on Different UK Wall Types

Brick walls: drill 6mm pilot holes with an SDS drill, insert Fischer UX 6x30mm wall plugs, and fix the junction box with 3.5x35mm screws. Seal the junction box back with silicone sealant before mounting. The camera attaches to the junction box with supplied screws. For heavier PTZ cameras, use M6 expanding anchors (10mm SDS bit, 50mm depth) directly through the junction box into the brick. Timber walls: use 4x40mm wood screws directly into timber. Ensure screws penetrate at least 30mm into solid timber. EWI (External Wall Insulation): requires extended fixings (120mm+ cavity fixings or frame fixings) through the insulation into the brick substrate. The junction box must have a recessed back or a spacer plate to sit flush on the insulation surface. Plasterboard walls: not suitable for direct camera mounting. Install a timber noggin between studs or use a heavy-duty butterfly anchor with a spreader plate. Maximum camera weight on plasterboard is 5kg with appropriate fixings. Concrete walls: use M6 expanding sleeve anchors (10mm SDS, 50mm depth) or M8 resin anchors for heavier cameras. Concrete is easier than brick - less risk of the brick shattering during drilling.

FAQ

Do I need a junction box for my CCTV camera?
Yes for all UK outdoor installations. The junction box protects the camera cable connection from rain, condensation, and rodents. It also provides a more secure mounting point than fixing the camera directly to the wall. Indoor cameras do not need junction boxes if the cable is routed through the wall behind the camera.
How do I weatherproof a CCTV junction box?
1) Apply silicone sealant to the back face before fixing to the wall. 2) Use rubber grommets for all cable entry holes. 3) Apply silicone sealant around cables entering the box. 4) Ensure the lid gasket is clean and undamaged before closing. 5) Use a drip loop on the external cable 150mm below the junction box.
Can I paint CCTV junction boxes to match my wall?
Yes, ABS plastic junction boxes can be painted with exterior-grade spray paint (PlastiKote, 8 from B&Q). Lightly sand the surface first for adhesion. Apply 2-3 thin coats. Do not paint over the rubber gasket or the camera mounting surface. Metal boxes may need a primer first. For more information see our CCTV Cable and Wiring Guide UK.
