Smart Lock for Wooden Doors UK¶
Guide to fitting smart locks on UK timber doors covering smart deadlock actuators, full replacement smart mortise locks, BS 3621 compliance, and installation for period and modern wooden doors.
Smart Lock Options for Wooden Doors¶
Traditional UK wooden doors typically use a 5-lever mortise deadlock (BS 3621) or a rim lock. Three smart retrofit options exist: smart deadlock actuators that attach to the back of your existing deadlock and motorise the key turn, full replacement smart mortise locks, and smart escutcheons that replace the internal thumb-turn with a keypad. Smart deadlock actuators are the simplest retrofit. Nuki Smart Lock 2.0 with Key Turn (£280-£350) is the most popular UK option. Full replacement mortise locks like the Ultion Smart Mortise (£300-£400) replace the entire 5-lever mortise lock. Smart escutcheons like the Yale Smart Escutcheon (£150-£250) allow keypad entry without changing the deadlock.
Installation for Wooden Doors¶
For smart deadlock actuators (Nuki Key Turn): Step 1: Ensure your existing deadlock has a key/thumb-turn on the inside. Step 2: Remove the existing thumb-turn. Step 3: Install the Nuki Key Turn module. Step 4: Mount the Nuki Smart Lock body over the Key Turn module. Step 5: Use the Nuki app to calibrate the lock rotation. For full replacement mortise locks: Step 1: Remove the existing mortise lock. Step 2: Remove the lock body from the door mortise. Step 3: Insert the smart mortise lock ensuring the bolt aligns. Step 4: Secure with faceplate screws. Step 5: Mount the smart module. For period properties, consult an MLA-approved locksmith before installation - historic lock cases may not accommodate standard smart components.
