Underfloor Data Cabling Installation

Run data cables through UK suspended timber and concrete floors for clean network distribution. This guide covers underfloor access, cable routing, floorboard lifting, fire stopping, and building regulations compliance.

Underfloor Cable Routing Methods

Underfloor spaces fall into two types in UK homes: suspended timber floors (most common in houses built before 1990) and concrete/solid floors (newer homes and ground floor flats). Suspended timber floors: floorboards laid on joists at 400mm centres. Access by lifting floorboards or cutting access hatches. Cable routing: run cables parallel to joists by threading through joist holes. For cross-joist routing drill 20-25mm holes at the neutral axis (centre of the joist depth) to maintain structural integrity. Do not notch the top or bottom of joists. UK Building Regulations Approved Document A requires holes no larger than 0.25x the joist depth and located between 0.25x and 0.4x the span from supports. For a 150mm joist that means holes under 37.5mm diameter. Use PVC conduit through joist holes for cable protection. Concrete/solid floors: cables run in 20mm PVC conduit embedded in the screed before floor finishing. Retrofit installation uses surface trunking or skirting trunking. Flat Ethernet cable (2mm thick, £1 per metre) can run under carpets or along skirting boards.

Fire Stopping and Building Regulations

Underfloor cable runs that pass between rooms or through fire compartments must comply with fire stopping regulations. UK Building Regulations Approved Document B requires that any penetration through a fire-resisting structure is fire-stopped to maintain the original fire resistance. Use intumescent sealant around cable bundles passing through walls. For multiple cables use a fire-rated cable transit (Prysmian or Roxtec, £20-£50 per unit). Installation procedure: Step 1: Lift floorboards at start and end points using a multi-tool to cut the tongue and groove joints. Step 2: Drill joist holes at the neutral axis using a 20mm auger bit. Step 3: Run PVC conduit through the joist holes from start to end. Step 4: Pull cables through the conduit using cable pulling lubricant. Step 5: Leave 1m service loop at both ends. Step 6: Fire-stop any wall penetrations with intumescent sealant. Step 7: Replace floorboards and secure with screws (not nails) for future access. Cost guide: DIY underfloor installation for a 3-bed house (8 data points, 200m cable, 50m conduit): materials £200-£350, professional installation £600-£1,200.
