Brick Wall TV Mounting Guide¶
Brick walls are the most common UK wall type for TV mounting. This guide covers fixing selection, drilling techniques, and weight considerations for brick wall mounting.
Understanding Brick Wall Construction¶
UK brick walls typically consist of 102mm facing brick with 100mm blockwork inner leaf separated by a 50-100mm cavity. Solid brick walls pre-1930s are 225mm thick. Engineering bricks Class A and B are denser than standard facing bricks. Thermalite aerated blocks are softer and need specialist fixings. Always drill into the brick face rather than mortar joints for maximum holding strength. The mortar joint can be inconsistent and unreliable for TV weight support.
Fixing Selection and Installation¶
Use masonry anchor bolts with the correct SDS drill bit. Fischer UX wall plugs 10x50mm with 8mm coach screws suit most brick types. For TVs over 30kg use resin anchors or expanding sleeve anchors. Drill depth 50-60mm. Clear dust before inserting plug. The fixing must penetrate solid brick by at least 40mm. For cavity walls ensure fixings reach the block inner leaf. Never rely on plaster alone for TV fixings.
Specifications and Comparison¶
| Brick Type | Difficulty | Fixing | Max TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard red brick | Medium | Fischer UX 10x50mm | 50kg |
| Engineering brick Class A | Hard | Resin anchor | 80kg |
| Concrete block 7Nmm2 | Medium | Fischer UX 10x50mm | 60kg |
| Aerated block Thermalite | Easy | Aerated block fixing | 35kg |
| Solid brick pre-1930s | Medium | Expanding sleeve anchor | 70kg |
FAQ¶
- Can I drill into UK engineering bricks?
- Yes but they are extremely hard. Use an SDS drill with carbide-tipped masonry bit. Resin anchors provide the strongest fixing for engineering bricks.
- Should I drill into brick or mortar?
- Always drill into the brick face. Mortar can be soft and variable especially in older properties. Position bracket so all fixing points land on brick.
- Do I need an SDS drill?
- Strongly recommended for engineering bricks and hard blocks. For standard red brick a quality hammer drill works. SDS drills cost £40-£80 at Screwfix.
- What about cavity wall insulation?
- Cavity insulation does not affect mounting if fixings reach the block inner leaf. Use cavity wall fixings with long sleeves or resin-injected anchors.
- Can I mount on single-skin brick?
- Yes for garages and outbuildings with resin anchors penetrating 50mm+ into brick. Assess wall structure for TVs over 32 inch. For more information see our Concrete Wall TV Mounting Guide.
