Fire Safety for UK Homes

Fire safety in UK homes is regulated by BS 5839-6 (smoke alarms), Approved Document B (Building Regulations), and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Every home should have interlinked smoke alarms on every floor, heat alarms in kitchens, and carbon monoxide detectors near fuel-burning appliances. Smart interlinked systems provide earlier warning and can integrate with home security platforms.

Key Considerations for UK Properties

  • Minimum Requirements: Grade D1 mains-powered interlinked alarms for new builds; at least one alarm per floor
  • Heat Alarms: Required in kitchens and garages — colour-coded yellow, activate at 58-65°C
  • CO Detectors: Mandatory in rented properties with solid-fuel or gas appliances; BS 50291-1 certified
  • Interlinking: Wireless RF systems (Aico RadioLINK, FireAngel Thermistek) are ideal for retrofits
  • Emergency Lighting: BS 5266-1 requires 3-hour battery duration in HMOs and communal areas
