Outdoor CCTV Camera Weatherproofing Guide¶
UK weather - rain, frost, fog, and coastal salt - can damage unprotected CCTV cameras. This guide covers IP ratings, weatherproof cable connections, condensation prevention, corrosion resistance, and winter protection for outdoor cameras.
Understanding IP Ratings for UK Outdoor CCTV¶
IP (Ingress Protection) rating is the standard for weatherproofing. The first digit (dust protection): 6 = dust-tight (required for all outdoor CCTV). The second digit (water protection): 5 = protected against water jets (sufficient for most UK locations), 6 = protected against powerful water jets/heavy seas, 7 = protected against immersion at 1m for 30 minutes, 8 = protected against continuous immersion. For UK homes: IP66 is the minimum recommendation - it protects against heavy rain and hose-down cleaning. IP67 is preferred for cameras exposed to direct rain without shelter (gable-end walls, freestanding poles). Coastal properties need IP67 or IP68 plus corrosion-resistant materials. IP ratings apply only when cables are properly sealed into the camera housing using IP68-rated cable glands. A camera with IP67 housing but an unsealed cable entry point has effective weather protection of zero. Use weatherproof junction boxes (10-20 from Screwfix) that provide IP66 for the cable connection point. Caution: dome cameras may have IP66/IP67 housing but the dome itself can accumulate internal condensation. Choose domes with hydrophobic coating or anti-fog treatment.
Corrosion Prevention and Winter Protection¶
Corrosion is the #1 cause of outdoor CCTV failure in the UK. Coastal salt air (within 5 miles of the coast) accelerates corrosion dramatically. Prevention: choose 316-grade stainless steel brackets (not standard 304 which rusts), use marine-grade aluminium or brass connectors, apply dielectric grease (8 from Halfords) to all electrical connections, and use self-amalgamating silicone tape (5 from Screwfix) over connectors. Annual inspection of brackets for rust - surface rust on standard steel brackets means replacement in 6-12 months. Winter protection: UK winter 2023 saw temperatures as low as -12C in some areas. CCTV cameras are rated to operate at -30C to -40C, so cold is not an issue for the camera itself. However, condensation inside the camera housing is the main winter problem. Temperature cycling (cold night to warmer day) causes moisture to collect inside the housing. Solutions: silica gel desiccant packs (5 for 10 from Amazon UK) inside the camera junction box, breathable vent plugs (RITTAL vent, 3 each) that let moisture escape while keeping water out, and pre-emptive application of anti-fog coating inside the dome before winter. Snow accumulation on dome cameras can block the view. Install dome cameras under an eave or use a sun shield/rain shield (12-15 from Amazon UK) to reduce snow build-up.

FAQ¶
- What IP rating do I need for outdoor CCTV in the UK?
- IP66 is the minimum for UK outdoor use. IP67 is recommended for cameras exposed to direct rain without shelter. IP68 is needed only for ground-level cameras that may be temporarily submerged in puddles. Ensure cable entry points match the IP rating of the camera housing.
- How do I stop condensation inside my outdoor CCTV camera?
- Three approaches: 1) Apply anti-fog coating to the inside of the dome before installation. 2) Place silica gel desiccant packs inside the junction box or camera housing. 3) Use breathable vent plugs that equalise pressure while blocking water. Check camera housing seals annually - replace if cracked or perished.
- How long do outdoor CCTV cameras last in UK weather?
- With proper weatherproofing: 5-7 years. Without weatherproofing: 1-2 years (connectors corrode, seals fail, moisture enters). 316 stainless steel brackets last 10+ years in coastal areas. Regular maintenance (annual seal inspection, connector cleaning) extends camera life to 7-10 years. For more information see our CCTV Junction Box and Mounting Guide.
