Smart Lock for uPVC Doors Guide¶
Guide to choosing and installing smart locks on UK uPVC doors covering euro cylinder compatibility, multipoint locking systems, handle types, and common uPVC door specifications.
uPVC Door Lock Compatibility¶
Most uPVC doors in the UK use a euro-profile cylinder that the smart lock replaces while leaving the existing multipoint locking mechanism intact. The most common UK uPVC door cylinder sizes are 35/35mm, 35/45mm, and 40/40mm. The cam (rotating part that operates the lock) is typically offset cam for UK uPVC doors. The handle type matters: some smart locks are incompatible with inline/vertical handles found on certain UK uPVC doors. Popular uPVC-compatible smart locks: Yale Conexis L1 (compatible with ERA, Mila, Avocet multipoint locks), Ultion Smart (fits most UK uPVC cylinders), and Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 (works with any euro cylinder). Before purchasing, check the multipoint lock brand (ERA, Mila, Avocet, Yale) and verify the smart lock manufacturer lists compatibility.
Installation for uPVC Doors¶
Step 1: Open the uPVC door fully and remove the retaining screw on the door edge at the lock case level. Step 2: Slide the existing euro cylinder out. Measure to confirm replacement size. Step 3: Insert the new smart lock euro cylinder with the cam correctly aligned. For uPVC doors, the cam must engage with the multipoint lock mechanism. Step 4: Secure with the retaining screw - do not overtighten as uPVC door profiles can distort. Step 5: Mount the external keypad/reader on the outside using the provided screws. Step 6: Mount the internal motor unit on the inside. Step 7: Test lock operation manually - turn the internal knob to verify the multipoint lock engages correctly. Step 8: Insert batteries and complete app setup. Step 9: Test all functions: keypad entry, app unlock, auto-lock, and physical key override. If the lock operates stiffly, the door may be misaligned - adjust the uPVC door hinges to reduce friction.
