Doorbell Camera Field of View Guide

Guide to video doorbell camera field of view specifications and how to choose the right lens angle for UK front doors, pathways, and porch layouts.

Understanding Field of View for UK Video Doorbells

A video doorbell's field of view (FoV) determines how much of the doorstep, pathway, and approaching visitor you can see. The most common lenses are: 160 degrees horizontal 84 degrees vertical (Ring Pro 2), 145 degrees 105 degrees (Nest Doorbell battery), 160 degrees 78 degrees (Eufy S330), and 180 degrees 130 degrees (Hikvision DS-KD8003). For a typical UK front door with a 1 - 2 metre pathway, a 160 degrees horizontal FoV captures both the visitor and a 40 30 cm package on the doorstep. A narrower FoV (145 degrees) misses the far edges of the step but produces less fisheye distortion - better for face identification and potential legal evidence. Vertical FoV is critical for UK two-storey homes where the step is at ground level but the letterbox may be 80 cm from the ground. The Hikvision 130 degrees vertical captures the full door panel from ground to letterbox without tilt. Nest's 105 degrees vertical requires the doorbell to be mounted at 105 - 120 cm to frame the face while catching packages on the step. Distortion correction (dewarping) is applied automatically on Ring and Hikvision models; Eufy's raw 160 degrees image has barrel distortion at the edges, making it harder to identify faces at the periphery - best to mount Eufy centred on the door.

Choosing the Right FoV for Your UK Property Layout

The optimal FoV depends on your property's approach distance and door orientation. For a standard UK terraced house with a 1-metre path direct to the pavement: 160 degrees horizontal is ideal - you see the full path width and a visitor approaching from either side. For a semi-detached or detached property with a 3 - 5 metre driveway: a wider FoV (180 degrees) is beneficial to track visitors walking up the drive, but you must position the doorbell at the end of the path closest to the street. For flats with a communal corridor: a narrower FoV (145 degrees) reduces capture of adjacent doors and windows, improving ICO compliance. As of 2025, Which? testing found that doorbells with over 160 degrees horizontal FoV increase the risk of capturing the public pavement under ICO guidance - the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) do not ban wide-angle doorbells, but the ICO can ask you to adjust the angle or masking zone. All Ring and Hikvision models support privacy masking - blacking out a section of the image - to comply. Measure your property's approach distance with a tape measure, then use this rule: multiply the distance from door to pavement by 1.2 to get the minimum horizontal coverage needed in centimetres.

FAQ

What field of view is best for identifying visitors on a short path?
145 - 160 degrees horizontal is ideal for a UK terraced house with a 1 - 2 m path. Wider angles (180 degrees) cause fisheye distortion making face identification harder, especially at the image edges.
Does a wider FoV increase the risk of breaching ICO privacy rules?
Yes. FoV above 160 degrees increases the chance of capturing neighbouring doors or the public pavement. Use privacy masking (blackout zones) to restrict the visible area to your boundary. The ICO recommends masking as good practice.
Can I get a doorbell that sees my full driveway?
Yes, choose a model with 160 - 180 degrees horizontal FoV and mount it at the end of the driveway closest to the street. For drives longer than 5 metres, consider a Hikvision DS-KD8003 (180 degrees) or add a secondary camera. For more information see our Video Doorbell Mounting Height Guide UK.
