TV Mounting on Plasterboard Walls¶
Plasterboard walls can support a TV with the correct cavity fixings. This guide covers plasterboard thickness testing, fixing selection, weight limits, and installation techniques for UK plasterboard walls.
Understanding Plasterboard Wall Construction¶
UK plasterboard walls come in several types: standard wallboard (12.5mm thick, used on stud walls), fire-resistant board (12.5mm or 15mm, pink, for garages and party walls), moisture-resistant board (12.5mm, green, for bathrooms), and foil-backed board (12.5mm with vapour barrier for external walls). The board is fixed to timber or metal studs at 400mm or 600mm centres. The critical factor for TV mounting is whether you mount into the stud or rely on the plasterboard alone. When mounting into studs follow the stud wall guide. When mounting between studs use cavity fixings designed to distribute load across the board face. Maximum TV weight for plasterboard-only mounting is 15kg with appropriate fixings. For heavier TVs mount into the studs. Always check for hidden pipes and cables using a cable detector before drilling into plasterboard.
Cavity Fixing Types and Installation¶
Several cavity fixing types are available for TV mounting on plasterboard. Spring toggle fixings: wings spring open behind the board, suitable for 10-15kg depending on quantity. Gripit fixings: UK-designed specifically for TV mounting, each holding up to 35kg in 12.5mm board. Gripit uses a large faceplate distributing load across the board. Install Gripit with the correct hole size (drill with 3mm bit then use the Gripit tool to enlarge). Fischer DuoPlaster fixings are rated 20kg each. Other types: hollow wall anchors (Molly bolts) rated 10-15kg, self-drill plasterboard anchors rated 5-10kg (suitable only for light loads). Number of fixings: for a 15kg TV with a 4-fixing wall plate and Gripit fixings (35kg each), total capacity is 140kg -- well within safety margins. For heavier TVs combine stud fixings and cavity fixings. Mount at least two fixings into studs if possible. Prices: Gripit pack of 10 £15 from Screwfix, Fischer DuoPlaster pack of 10 £12 from Toolstation.

FAQ¶
- Can I mount a 55 inch TV on plasterboard only?
- Not recommended. A 55-inch TV weighs 16-20kg which exceeds safe plasterboard-only limits. Use cavity fixings rated for the weight and ideally mount at some fixing points into studs behind the board.
- What are the best UK plasterboard fixings for TV mounting?
- Gripit fixings are the best UK option for TV mounting on plasterboard. Each Gripit holds up to 35kg in 12.5mm board. Available at Screwfix for £15 per pack of 10. Designed and made in the UK.
- Can I use toggle bolts for TV mounting on plasterboard?
- Yes, spring toggle fixings work well on plasterboard. Each toggle bolt is rated 10-15kg. Use 4 toggles for a 15kg TV. Toggles cost £8 per pack but are harder to install than Gripit fixings.
- How do I know if my plasterboard is strong enough for a TV?
- Check the board thickness by looking at an edge or drilling a small test hole. 12.5mm standard board with Gripit fixings holds up to 35kg per fixing. Older 9.5mm board is not suitable for TV mounting.
- Should I always mount into studs behind plasterboard?
- It is the strongest option. Use a stud finder to locate studs. If the wall plate aligns with stud positions use M8 coach screws into studs plus Gripit fixings for any off-stud fixing points. For more information see our TV Mounting on Dot-Dab Plasterboard.
