Smart Deadbolt Installation Guide UK¶
How to install a smart deadbolt on UK doors - fitting, alignment, calibration, and tips for uPVC, composite, and timber doors.
Understanding Smart Deadbolt Types for UK Homes¶
Smart deadbolts for the UK market differ from US-style cylindrical deadbolts. UK smart deadbolts integrate with the existing Euro-profile cylinder - the motorised body turns the cylinder's cam to throw or retract the bolt. The Nuki 3.0 Pro (£179) and Ultion Keyturn WiFi (£279) are the two most popular smart deadbolt solutions. The Yale Linus (£129) offers a compact motor unit that fits over the existing thumb turn. Most smart deadbolts maintain the original cylinder, so the existing key still works - a major advantage for multi-occupant homes. UK standards require the deadbolt to extend at least 20 mm into the strike plate (BS 3621 requirement). Smart locks achieve this through the existing cylinder's throw; no additional bolt is added. The motorised unit typically adds 15 - 20 mm of protrusion on the internal door face.
Calibration and Testing After Installation¶
Once the smart deadbolt is mounted, calibration is the critical step. The Nuki app runs an automatic calibration: the motor cycles the bolt in and out to measure the exact travel distance. If the lock reports a 'binding' error, the mounting ring likely needs adjustment using the supplied spacers. Calibration takes 2 - 3 minutes. After calibration, test the deadbolt 10 times from the exterior using the key and 10 times from the interior using the app or keypad. Listen for grinding or clicking sounds. The Ultion Keyturn includes a manual calibration mode that lets you fine-tune the end stops within 0.5 mm increments. A correctly calibrated smart deadbolt operates silently and smoothly. If the lock is used on a door with a multi-point system, the smart deadbolt only controls the main bolt; the shoot bolts remain manual.

FAQ¶
- Does a smart deadbolt replace my existing lock or work alongside it?
- It works alongside it. Most smart deadbolts sit over your existing Euro cylinder, allowing the original key to still operate the lock.
- How far should the deadbolt extend into the strike plate?
- BS 3621 requires a minimum 20 mm bolt projection. UK smart deadbolts achieve this through the existing cylinder - no modification is needed.
- Can I install a smart deadbolt on a composite door?
- Yes - composite doors use standard Euro cylinders. The Nuki 3.0 Pro and Ultion Keyturn both include shims for composite door profiles. For more information see our Smart Lock Installation Guide UK.
