Fence Security Guide UK

Guide to securing garden fences and boundaries for UK properties, covering fence types, anti-climb treatments, gate integration, and shared boundary responsibilities.

Choosing Secure Garden Fencing

Fencing is the primary physical boundary for most UK homes but provides limited security unless properly specified and maintained. The most secure fence type is closeboard or feather-edge fencing at 1.8 metres height with concrete gravel boards. Lapped timber panels are cheaper but have horizontal rails that provide climbing aids. Closeboard fencing has vertical boards spaced tightly with no footholds. Concrete fence posts set in Postcrete provide the strongest fixing. Concrete gravel boards prevent rot at the base and stop digging underneath. Wooden gravel boards rot within 5-7 years and create gaps at the base. Metal fencing offers the highest security but at 3-5 times the timber cost. Paladin metal fencing costs 80-150 per metre installed.

Fence Security Reinforcements

Several upgrades improve fence security without full replacement. Trellis fixed along the top of the fence with 45 degree angled brackets makes climbing difficult. Cost: 8-15 per metre for trellis plus brackets. Anti-climb spikes or rotating rollers on top of vulnerable sections. Spike strips cost 10-20 per metre. Plant thorny climbers along the fence base to create a natural barrier against digging underneath. Fill gaps at the fence base with chicken wire pegged into the ground, then plant over. Ensure fence posts are concreted into the ground not just set in soil. Replace rotten fence panels immediately a weak panel is an invitation to intruders. For shared boundaries, discuss security upgrades with your neighbour before making changes.

FAQ

Do I own the fence on my boundary?
In UK property law, there is no automatic rule about fence ownership. Check your property deeds which usually indicate responsibility with T marks on the boundary line. The left-side fence looking from the front is typically the homeowner's responsibility.
What is the best anti-climb fence treatment?
Trellis angled at 45 degrees on top of the fence is the most effective anti-climb measure. Anti-climb spikes and rotating rollers are also effective but may look aggressive.
Can my neighbour object to fence security upgrades?
Yes, if the upgrade affects their side of the boundary. Discuss planned changes with neighbours before installing trellis, spikes, or raising fence height. The Party Wall Act may apply to certain boundary changes. For more information see our Security Landscaping Guide.
